Former Florida head coach Dan Mullen has been choosy, and he can be. Currently an ESPN commentator, he passed on UAB interest and said he’s not taking the South Carolina offensive coordinator job. Mullen went at Florida with three New Year’s Six bowls and before that at Mississippi State. He’s won national championships as an assistant and coached at places with inherent disadvantages. The "Boilermaker" nickname came about during the early years of Purdue football. There had been rumors the university enrolled burly boilermakers from the Monon Railroad shops in Lafayette, Indiana as students/football players to help beef up the scrawny football team.
Throughout his career, Herrmann would break the Big Ten's all-time career passing yards and passing touchdowns before his senior season. After a disappointing 1981 season, Young resigned from his position as head coach at Purdue, citing his desire to concentrate on athletic administration. Herrmann would break the NCAA record for passing yards and passing touchdowns for freshman. In 1978, Young would lead Purdue to a record, and a victory over Georgia Tech in the 1978 Peach Bowl. Young was named the Big Ten's Coach of the Year, the first Boilermaker head coach to ever win the award.

In 2017, Brohm was named coach at Purdue and after his second season with the Boilermakers, Louisville tried to lure him home. After six seasons as Purdue's football coach, Brohm is returning home to Louisville, first reported by ESPN senior writer Chris Low. Faculty and staff who will be on campus for business purposes on these Saturdays when the remainder of home games are scheduled and the evenings before are encouraged to seek alternate parking to avoid paying event rates. Individuals working departmental events for Homecoming, held on Sept. 24 this year, should plan ahead accordingly. The Akers hiring caused starting quarterback Jeff George to transfer due to the Akers running style offense as opposed to Burtnett's passing offense. Coming off a victory over Illinois on the road, the team welcomes Northwestern to Ross-Ade Stadium on Saturday, marking the final home matchup of the year. The Boilermakers and Wildcats are scheduled to kick off at noon ET. The game marks Senior Day for the Boilermakers, who have a total of 27 seniors on the roster. A win would give them a 4-2 record at home for the 2022 campaign and the third victory over the Wildcats in the last four years. Four Boilermakers, Bob Griese, Leroy Keyes, Mark Herrmann and Drew Brees have each been finalist for the award in two separate seasons.
